How Brains and Bibles Transformed My Faith and Family Leadership

I first encountered Brains and Bibles when Joel Willoughby came to my church’s Men’s Retreat. During that weekend, I had several conversations with Joel. I quickly realized that Joel not only knew the Bible deeply but also had a remarkable ability to explain complex ideas in a way I could understand. Over the past three years, Joel has been a consistent presence at our Men’s Retreats, and I’m eagerly looking forward to his return for the fourth one in January.

At one of those retreats, Joel spoke about the importance of men leading Bible studies in their homes. He shared his personal journey of starting family devotionals and said something I’ll never forget: “Something is better than nothing.” He encouraged us to stop waiting for the perfect devotional plan and just begin. Joel reminded us that God’s Word works even when we aren’t perfect (Praise God!). His message gave me the confidence to start leading my own family in Bible study.

At another retreat, I joined a conversation Joel was having with another man about Genesis 1 and its implications for today’s cultural views on gender and sexual orientation. Joel emphasized the importance of teaching our children what the Bible says on these topics while preserving their innocence. His thoughtful advice helped me approach a difficult conversation with my own children. As a result, they now have a firm understanding that God created them male and female and designed the family to reflect His plan.

Brains and Bibles has been an incredible resource for my family, my church, and me. I’ve seen Joel teach one-on-one, in small groups, in workshops, during morning services, and even over a week-long camp. Every time, his teaching is impactful and thought-provoking. I truly believe God is using Brains and Bibles to help believers deepen their understanding of His Word and grow in the knowledge of our great God. I pray that this ministry will continue to be used for His glory.
